The George R. Brown Convention Center is owned and operated by the City of Houston and hosts everything from trade shows, to concerts, business meetings of all sizes, conferences, sports competitions, and more. The futuristic design of the 100-foot-high building is not only eye-catching but functional. Some of the magnificent features of the Convention Center include:
1.2 million square feet of flexible exhibit, meeting and registration space- An exhibit hall with retractable seating for 6,000, suitable for large scale presentations, concerts, corporate meetings, and sporting events
- A grand ballroom offering 31,500 square feet of tasteful, functional event space; sub-divides into three sections
- A 3,600-seat tiered amphitheater (General Assembly Theater)
- 100 Meeting Rooms, 8 Boardrooms, 4 Conference Rooms, 17 Show Offices
The grand opening of the George R. Brown Convention Center in 1987 shined with a parade, music festival, aerial artwork, red-carpet tours, and a ribbon-cutting by the Mayor. A spectacular fireworks show capped the unveiling and civic pride in the new facility. The center is named for the late Houston entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist George R. Brown. Brown's Texas Eastern Corp. donated six of the 11 blocks required to build Houston's sparkling new red-white-and-blue convention center.
